When you open LumTale, you'll meet three portrait looks: Lumling Dream, Lumling Toon, and Lumling Studio. They share one warm, collectible-toy soul — but they're built for different moments. Here's exactly what each one does, which door delivers it, and how to get a result you'll actually want to keep.
What the Lumling style actually is
Lumling is LumTale's own portrait look — a soft, friendly style with rounded shapes, gentle light, and a slightly tactile, collectible-toy feel. Think of a little character figure you'd want to display on your shelf: recognizable as you, but reimagined with warmth. We created Lumling as a new category for LumTale, and we want to be crystal clear about it: Lumling does not copy any existing artist, studio, or brand. It's our original visual language, tuned so your identity survives the transformation instead of being smoothed away.
That last point matters. Most mass-market avatar apps quietly reshape non-white faces into something paler and more "standard." Lumling was designed to refuse that. The collectible-toy feeling is intentional, not decorative. We wanted a look that reads as "made with care" the moment you see it — the kind of portrait you'd print small and keep, not a generic filter that flattens everyone into the same face. Soft edges, warm palette, a hint of physical texture: those choices are what make a Lumling feel like a character rather than a processed photo. It's also why the style scales so well, from a tiny round avatar to a large poster, without losing the likeness that makes it yours.
The three Lumling flavors
Lumling Dream — the painterly portrait
Lumling Dream is our dream-painted look: soft brushwork, atmospheric light, and the kind of finished illustration you'd frame. It leans into gentle gradients and a storybook mood, so your portrait reads as art rather than a sticker. This is the style people pick for a profile picture that feels calm, crafted, and unmistakably "you." Because Dream needs more compute to keep edges clean and skin tones honest, it's a cloud-rendered style — see Door 2 below.
Lumling Toon — the bold cartoon
Lumling Toon is the punchy, cartoon side of the family. Thick, confident outlines, flat color blocks, and a playful expression make it the most "sticker-ready" of the three. It's perfect for an avatar that pops in a small circle, a Discord icon, or a fun share. Toon is also the lightest style to generate, which is why it's the one you can preview quickly and privately right on your own device.
Lumling Studio — the premium render
Lumling Studio is the top tier: a polished, high-detail render that fuses Dream's painterly soul with studio-grade finish — richer texture, finer lighting, and more refined control over the final frame. If you want the "wow, that's a real product" version of your portrait, Studio is it. Which door delivers what?
LumTale has two doors, and they map cleanly onto the styles above. The short version: Door 2 (cloud) is where Dream and Studio are born, and Door 1 (local) is where you grab a quick Toon-style preview without uploading a thing.

So the workflow we recommend: start on Door 1 for a private, no-upload Toon sneak peek, then step through Door 2 when you're ready for a dream-painted or studio-grade portrait. You get the fun instantly and the polish on demand.
Tips for the best Lumling result
- Use even, natural light. A window-facing selfie beats a harsh overhead bulb — Dream and Studio both reward soft, balanced lighting with honest skin tones.
- Show your face clearly. Eyes open, minimal heavy shadows, and a plain-ish background help the model keep your features faithfully yours.
- Pick the style for the moment. Toon for a small, punchy avatar; Dream for a calm illustrated portrait; Studio when you want the premium, finished render.
- Start local, then go cloud. Preview with Door 1's Toon to confirm the likeness, then render Dream or Studio on Door 2 for the keeper.
- Be patient with Studio. The premium render takes a little longer on purpose — that's the detail you're paying for, not a stall.
Which style should you try first?
If you're curious and privacy-first, open Door 1 and generate a Lumling Toon preview that never leaves your laptop. If you already know you want the framed, illustration-quality version of yourself, head straight to Door 2 and choose Dream or Studio. Either way, you keep the same promise: a fair, identity-preserving portrait that looks like you — never whitened, never warped.
