LumTale started with a frustrating observation: the apps we loved were quietly changing who we were. We built a fairer alternative — portraits that look like you, in a style that's genuinely our own.
A few years ago, one of our founders sent a childhood photo of her grandmother through a popular AI avatar app. The result was technically beautiful — and completely wrong. The warm, deep tones of her grandmother's skin had been lifted into something paler and "cleaner." The cheekbones had been narrowed. The face that came back looked less like the woman who raised her than like a generic template the app seemed to expect.
It wasn't a glitch. It was a pattern. Across most major avatar apps, non-white faces get quietly reshaped into something paler and more "standard." The models were trained mostly on light skin and Western features, so they nudged everyone toward that default. People of color, especially, paid a hidden cost: their portraits looked less like themselves and more like a flattened approximation of someone else.
We refused that. Identity is not a bug to be smoothed away. A portrait app should celebrate the face in front of it, not correct it toward an imagined norm. That conviction became the first line of LumTale's code and the last line of every paragraph on this site.
Once we knew what we were against, we had to decide what we were for. We didn't want a flat filter, and we didn't want to imitate the look of any single studio or artist. So we designed our own: Lumling — a warm, collectible-toy portrait style with soft rounded shapes, gentle earthy colors, and a friendly, handmade feel.
Lumling is a new visual language we created for LumTale. It is explicitly not a copy of any existing artist, franchise, or brand. We built it from scratch so that people who use LumTale get something that feels fresh and ours, while their real features — skin tone, eye shape, bone structure — stay unmistakably theirs. A Lumling portrait should make you think "that's me as a tiny treasured keepsake," not "that's a stock character."
Today Lumling lives in a few flavors: Lumling Dream for a dream-painted finish, Lumling Toon for a brighter cartoon look, and Lumling Studio for the deepest, most detailed renders. More are on the way.
Privacy isn't one-size-fits-all, so we built two honest ways in. You pick the door that fits the moment — and you always know which one you chose.
Door 1 runs the model right in your browser using WebGPU. Your photo never leaves your machine, is never uploaded, and is never used to train anything. It's the most private way to get a Lumling portrait — and it's the door we point privacy-first users to first.
Door 2 sends your photo to a vetted GPU partner for a higher-quality Lumling render. We're upfront about it: you'll see exactly where your photo goes before you upload, we link the partner's data policy, and we never store or train on your image. Honesty over fine print.
Everything above comes down to three commitments we will not break. They aren't marketing lines — they're the rules our models and our code are built to honor.
We don't lift or lighten your skin tone toward some "standard" shade. Your color is your color.
We don't narrow your features or reshape your bone structure. Your face stays your face.
We never store your photo or train our models on it — local or cloud.
